School Zone Camera Safety Program
House Bill 657 was passed by the Florida Legislature and subsequently signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis on May 31, 2023. This law authorizes the use of cameras to monitor and enforce speed limits around schools throughout the entire school day. The aim is to enhance safety for students and staff by curbing speeding in school zones.
Starting with the 2024-2025 school year, the City of West Miami will roll out this school camera safety program. These cameras will be strategically placed around school zones to capture and record instances of speeding. Any motorist caught violating the speed limits will receive a speeding ticket through the mail, based on the photographic evidence collected.
The implementation of this law is part of a broader effort to ensure the safety of children and reduce the risk of accidents in school areas. Beyond its immediate impact on speeding violations, this program also serves as a preventive measure, encouraging drivers to adhere to speed limits and drive cautiously around school zones at all times.
