Mayor Eric Diaz-Padron was born in the City of West Miami. He attended St. Theresa Catholic School, Belen Jesuit Preparatory School, and Florida International University before earning a Dean’s Merit Scholarship to attend the University of Miami School of Law, where he graduated with honors. In 2019, while in law school, Eric was sworn-in as Commissioner and was subsequently re-elected in 2020 and named Vice-Mayor. On April 12th, 2022, he was elected Mayor. In the private sector, Mayor Diaz-Padron is an attorney and business consultant with his own firm.
Prior to serving as Mayor, Eric served on the Board of Trustees of the Miami-Dade Transportation Trust, the City of West Miami Charter Review Board, and on the Miami-Dade Millennial Task Force, serving as Chair of the Economic & Community Development Subcommittee, the Planning Advisory Group for the Miami-Dade East-West Rapid Transit Corridor, and the Florida Bar Grievance Committee – Eleventh Circuit. Currently, he serves on the Florida League of Cities Young Elected Municipal Officials Advisory Council, Miami-Dade County International Trade Consortium, and Belen Jesuit Alumni Association for Jesuit Schools in Cuba and Miami – Delegate.
Mayor Diaz-Padron has set out to fight for the residents and taxpayers of the City of West Miami and maintains strong relationships with local, state, and federal officials. Mayor Diaz-Padron has worked with government partners to achieve millions of dollars in infrastructure funding – including a record $5 million in appropriations in 2022. Under his leadership, West Miami has lowered taxes to an historic low while increasing police spending.
As Mayor, Eric has sponsored many laws to make traffic studies related to development more transparent, increase notice and parking requirements for developments, and creating boards to promote resident engagement. Eric also sponsored the “Veterans Only Parking” initiative and placing “In God We Trust” in the commission chambers. Additionally, he worked with Coral Gables Vice Mayor Vince Lago and Miami Commissioner Manolo Reyes to create multi-agency human trafficking task forces and joint enforcement zones between the cities’ police departments and worked with Miami-Dade County to fund home delivered meals to homebound seniors throughout the COVID-19 lockdowns.
